Generals will be the first C&C RTS title to be presented to in
full 3D, and this means both terrain and units. The only thing
to remain in old-school 2D in will be the interface. This will
make management of units and buildings a very straightforward
affair and keep the whole operation of the game running
smoothly.Play with three sides: China, the Global Liberation Army
[GLA], and finally the US.
The engine itself is called "Sage" and has been in development
for nearly a year and a half at EA Pacific. While initially the
development team did look at using the Quake 3, Unreal or
LithTech engines, the final decision was to stick with
Renegade's W3D technology. Sage is capable of rendering
spectacular visual effects, allowing implementation of features
that weren't included in the previous C&C games. For example,
the development team is using a thermal imaging
effect to represent units that are behind solid objects and
structures, and Sage will allow them to do that. Missions that
take place during different times of day will also be a
possibility in Generals, thanks to dynamic lightning that casts
realistic shadows and impressive reflections on most objects.
Units will get four levels of veteran status. Green, Veteran, Elite, and finally Hero
